Inspiring a Love for Learning

“Let all that you do be done with love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14

Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Design and technology

Intent

Our Design and Technology curriculum introduces the children to a range of skills and techniques. Our Design and Technology programme introduces the children to three aspects of Design and Technology learning throughout the school year: nutrition, 3d build and textile. The children are taught to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make a product. Skills are taught progressively to ensure that all children are able to learn and practice in order to develop as they move through the school. Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their product.

Implementation

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year on year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Our Design and Technology curriculum develops skills in three core activities:

  • Activities which involve investigating and evaluating existing products.
  • Focused tasks in which children develop particular aspects of knowledge and skills.
  • Designing and making activities in which children design and make for an audience with a purpose.

The progression of skills also includes a progression in appropriate vocabulary.

Impact

Our Design and technology curriculum will lead to;

  • An excellent attitude to learning and independent working.
  • A knowledge of a range of work by sculpture and textile artists.
  • The ability to act as responsible designers and makers, working ethically and safely.
  • A thorough knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products.
  • The ability to manage risks and to manufacture products safely and hygienically.
  • An enthusiasm for the subject and a desire to continue their learning in the future.
